Potato and Peas Kurma | Urulaikilangu Pattaani Kurma | Aloo Matar Curry

Potato and Peas Kurma - a traditional fragrant curry from South India which tastes delicious and is very easy to prepare.  It goes very well with mild pulaos, rotis, puris, phulkas or paratha.

The same dish can be prepared with mixed vegetables too like carrot, beans, cauliflower, etc.  Check out the mixed vegetable kurma recipe here.

Potato Peas Kurma, Aloo Matar Curry

Ingredients:

  • Potatoes - 3 medium sized
  • Fresh green peas - 1/2 cup
  • Onion - 1, finely chopped
  • Tomato - 1, finely chopped
  • Cinnamon - 2 small pieces
  • Cardamom - 1
  • Cloves - 2
  • Salt - As per taste
  • Oil - 2 tbl spn

To Grind:
  • Fresh coconut - 1/2 cup
  • Green chillies - 4
  • Ginger - 1-inch piece
  • Garlic - 3 pods
  • Cashew nuts - 2
  • Turmeric - 1/2 tsp

How To Prepare Potato and Peas Kurma:

  • Wash the potatoes and peas and pressure cook them to one whistle.  Peel the skin from the potatoes and cut them into small cubes.
  • Heat oil in a kadai and add the cinnamon, cardamom and cloves and let them fry for a few seconds.
  • Add onion and fry till it turns light brown.
  • Add tomato and let it cook till it turns mushy.
  • Now add the ground paste and mix well and let it cook till the raw smell goes off.
  • Add the potatoes and peas and mix well and just enough water to cover the veggies (do not add too much water as the veggies are already boiled).
  • Let it cook for some time.  Adjust salt if necessary.  I generally retain some gravy because that's how my family likes it.  If you prefer a thicker version, then let it cook till the gravy becomes thick and remove from fire.
  • The kurma is now ready to serve.  It goes really well with rotis, phulkas, puris and plain hot rice.
